International banking woes and calling codes that don't work

Ahh, the joys of international banking and calling codes that don't work. A few days ago I tried to make an internet purchase here in Europe using my American bank card...."Transaction Declined." Ok, so check the balance..yes, plenty of funds. So I wrote to my banker back home in Phoenix Arizona, and he does a little detective work and ta daaa! My card was flagged for being stolen!!! Ok, before I left the US I called my bank's fraud prevention number to establish I was taking my cards out of the country and would be using them in Europe. No problem. But for some reason they reacted to an internet purchase by flagging the card. So I am grateful and see the necessity of protecting my card, but the problem is, they have to get a phone call from me or they will close the card...BIG problem because the RO post office does not allow credit cards to come into the country by mail. So I would be without access to my bank in America...no way to get a replacement!

So my banker, who is very helpful, gave me an international calling code so the call would be free. Well, no matter what we did, no matter how we fiddled with it, it would not go through, so I ended up calling them on my nickel, which entailed many wrong departments, and endless time on ignore listening to maddening music. Finally, got it handled! Turns out they had lost my records of ever setting this up in the first place. Aaarrrrggghhh!!! Bet that call is going to cost me $20 at least.
